WHAT DOES DESIGN FROM EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES LOOK LIKE? IS THERE A 'UNIQUELY EAST EUROPEAN' APPROACH TO DESIGN?
WHAT ARE THE ROOTS AND TRADITIONS OF DESIGN IN EASTERN EUROPE
– HOW DID THE THE COLLAPSE OF THE IRON CURTAIN ALTER THE WAY OF DESIGNING IN THE COUNTRIES AFFECTED?
WHAT ARE THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN DESIGN AND WHO IS CREATING THEM?

PROJECT – EXHIBITION AIMS

An exhibition is being prepared to answer these and other questions through a showcase of the vast creative potential that exists in those nations that obtained independence in 1989. In mapping the extraordinary achievements made during this difficult period, we aim at introducing some little-known aspects of our neighbours' cultures, thus re-shaping the way we perceive them.

It has become evident that the level of research and creativity generated in these diverse and fertile societies is on equal footing with West European standards, where design has firmly established itself as a part of general culture and a powerful economic force as well.

Showcasing both emerging talents and established names, this will be the first project to create a united image of design creativity from the entire region, and will contribute to further open a window on our closest neighbours.

SELECTION PROCESS

The exhibit selection places an emphasis on creative and innovative aspects of design, on designers who are able to draw on their own creative culture, to adapt and to cite it, creating objects of outstanding design quality.

The selection process is being carried out in cooperation with acclaimed design experts in each country; among those are exhibition curators, leading academics, design journalists and representatives of professional design associations.

SELECTION CRITERIA

+ QUALITY OF DESIGN
+ QUALITY OF IDEA [ORIGINALITY]
+ INNOVATIVE TYPOLOGY
+ INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIAL
+ DESIGNER'S IMPORTANCE
[DESIGNER'S MOST IMPORTANT WORK]
+ OBJECT'S RECOGNITION [NATIONAL – INTERNATIONAL]
+ TERRITORIAL REPRESENTATION
   [INTERPRETATION OF LOCAL CHARACTERISTICS]
+ INNOVATIVE RE-INTERPRETATION
   [TRADITIONAL FORMS, IDENTITIES, MATERIALS, TECHNIQUES]
+ EXPERIMENTATION
+ OBJECTS WHICH HAVE THE CAPACITY TO BECOME ICONS OF DESIGN,
THANKS TO THEIR AESTHETIC AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

RESEARCH DIRECTIONS

Extensive research into both existing and currently forming design networks in all participating nations and into respective design histories was begun in June 2005. Special attention has been paid to socio-economic and political aspects, which have had decisive effects on design development.

The analysis has been extended to cover public reception of design's changing social role, of shifts in professional approach and design thinking, leading up to the mapping of a subsequent rise in design-oriented productivity.

Research has been carried out in cooperation with, and with the dedicated support of, various national design institutions and initiatives.

RESEARCH AREAS

GEOGRAPHIC

Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine – European nations with markedly different identities despite having a similar history.

THEMATIC

All principal fields of three-dimensional creation including excurses into graphic design / visual communication.

ADDITIONAL

An investigation into the socio-economical changes of the early 90's, identification of emerging currents within consecutive phases of re-orientation. Identification of ways in which aspects of local design heritage have been rejected or nurtured; investigation into the reception of global trends, the reactions to them and their absorption.

DOCUMENTATION
CATALOGUE / BLACK BOOK

Results of the above mentioned analysis are collected within an extended catalogue featuring exhibits and designer presentations as well as analytical and introductory essays, interviews and an index section covering the existing design network. Introductions into each nation's history of design supplement the existing lack of readily-available background information on the entire area's design development.

ORGANIZERS
PERSONS AND ENTIETIES

The project's head office is located in Berlin, a city that has long functioned as a connection point between east and west, and home to a flourishing young design scene.
The project's curator Ake Rudolf, born in Poland, was appointed by IDA following his cure of the agency's Young Polish Designers exhibition in 2003 and support of the EU+ exhibition at Designmai Berlin 2004. The organizer is Italian Design Agency (IDA), a Milan-based exhibition organization body and design promoter.

TOUR
SCHEDULE AND UPDATES

The exhibition tour is scheduled to open in Milan, Italy in early 2007, followed by a tour visiting both west and east european capitals. Tour details, additional information and updates will be posted regularly on this site.
